Our world is filled with words. Old words. New words. While the words themselves do not change, they may develop new nuances over time. Words can also be stale. Even in Christian circles. We tend to call such words Christian jargon or Christian lingo.
When expressing the Word of God, speaking or writing becomes much more sacred. The one who delivers God’s message to others must convey divine truth to thirsty hearts with humility, love, and wisdom. The purpose of presenting God’s Word is to help the listener or the reader know God better. To understand His love, and to grow in faith.
The Bible reminds us that speech should be accompanied by wisdom and love.
What the Book of Colossians Teaches About Communication
The book of Colossians states:
“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
Colossians 4:6
What Paul seems to be saying is that the way we present our message is as important as the message itself. Truth spoken without love can alienate hearts; but when truth is spoken with love and humility, it touches hearts.
Our Lord was a perfect example of wise speech in his teachings. He spoke to people in simple, understandable language; he used examples from everyday life to reveal deep spiritual truths. He spoke not only to the ears of people, but also to their hearts. For this reason, his words brought hope, repentance, healing, and life-changing results.
Speaking About God Requires Three Essential Things
The one who presents the Word of God must prepare his heart before preparing his speech. For the real impact of God’s message does not come from human ability alone, but from the work of the Holy Spirit. A speaker may be well trained with the ability to move hearts and emotions. Yet if his speech is devoid of the love of God, it cannot affect hearts as it ought to.
Therefore, speaking about God requires three essential things: truth, love, and wisdom. Truth establishes the message. Love opens the way for it to enter hearts. And wisdom helps the message to be expressed at the right time and in the right way.
His Word Never Returns Empty
We must remember that every word we speak to God and about His Word is a precious trust. Let us pray that God will make our tongues and our pens (including keyboards) a means of blessing; that we may speak not to attract the attention of men, but to glorify His name. Because a word that comes from a humble heart filled with the love of God can be a light for those who are searching for the truth and a bridge that brings people closer to the presence of God.
The Lord continues to remind us that His Word never returns empty. As we seek to proclaim His truth with love, humility, and wisdom, He is pleased to use His Word to strengthen believers, draw people to Himself, and transform lives.
